Alternative Medicine

When exploring the field of alternative medicine one discovers that there are numerous approaches to health care. Western Medicine, usually referred to as allopathic medicine is the reference point from which alternative medicine approaches are considered.

Thus cultural, historical and philosophical differences in health care approaches serve as the foundations for the various fields of alternative health care.

Various fields in alternative health care are:

  • Ayurveda (science of life) aims to restore the balance of the three doshas

  • (Vatta, Pitta , and Kapha) that govern all the biological and metabolic processes.

  • Yoga utilizes posture and breathing exercises that promote health and prevent disease

  • Homeopathy believes that treatment with diluted substances that produce symptoms of the disease can also produce a cure

  • Naturopathy relies on the body’s inherent power to heal itself by restoring the harmony between individuals and nature and the natural elements within.

  • Osteopathy

  • Acupuncture

  • Chinese Medicine

  • Indigenous Medicine

  • Amchi or Sowa-Rigpa (Tibetan system)

  • Unani (System of medicine introduced in India in the Medieval period)
